What is WordPress?

WordPress is an open-source content management system written in PHP, with its content stored in a MySQL database. It began as a blogging tool in 2003 and now runs roughly two in five websites, from personal blogs to enterprise marketing sites.

Its strength is the ecosystem: themes decide how a site looks, plugins add what it does, and the block editor lets people build pages without code. Its weakness is the same ecosystem. An unmanaged site collects plugins, slows down and becomes a security risk, which is why the way it is built matters more than the fact that it is WordPress.

How I use WordPress

Most of my career has happened on WordPress. I built client sites on it at Design Republik and TeamQ, ran a WordPress multisite for a regulated fund manager in the UK, and today I own an enterprise software company's website end to end: the theme, the plugins, the deploy pipeline and the search performance.

I write the parts that matter by hand: payment gateways, booking integrations and membership plugins for clients, my open framework for AI on WordPress, and this portfolio, a custom block theme with no page builder. I also teach WordPress theme and plugin development at Conestoga College.
