What is MySQL?
MySQL is a relational database: data lives in tables of rows and columns, and applications read and write it with SQL. It has been a default of web hosting since the 1990s, and WordPress and WooCommerce run on it or on its fork, MariaDB.
Most performance problems on a busy WordPress site end up here: slow queries, missing indexes and options tables full of data loaded on every request.
How I use MySQL
Every WordPress site in this portfolio runs on MySQL, and at Brook Capital I set up and ran the server behind the website, database included, until the company closed in 2021.
I studied PHP and MySQL at Seneca, and the database is never far from my WordPress work, from custom queries in plugins to clean-ups after migrations.
