What is Claude API?
The Claude API is how software talks to Anthropic's Claude models. An application sends a prompt, documents, images or a list of tools the model may call, and gets back text, structured data or a request to run one of those tools.
For product work the useful parts are tool use, long context, prompt caching and batch jobs. Together they let a model read a lot, act through code you control and stay affordable at volume.
How I use Claude API
I call the Claude API from WordPress plugins, alongside OpenAI and Gemini, and route each job to the model that suits it. In my open framework for AI on WordPress, AI Workbench Hub does that routing, so every plugin on a site uses Claude through one door with one set of rules.
The rule I build by: the model decides structure and suggests, PHP validates, and a person approves. Long jobs run in the background and reuse a prompt cache, so working with large inputs stays affordable.
