What is JavaScript?

JavaScript is the language every browser runs. It handles what happens after a page loads: menus, forms, animation and data fetched in the background. Standardised as ECMAScript, it also runs on servers through Node.js.

The language has grown up since 2015. Modules, async and await, classes and a richer standard library mean most of what jQuery once did now needs no library at all.

How I use JavaScript

I write JavaScript on every site. On the Jonas club sites, built on an old Kentico with no plugin marketplace, every enhancement was written by hand: the first dark mode the company shipped, at The British Club, and the scroll-to-top ring at Mentor Harbor Yachting Club that turns with the page and changes colour with the section behind it.

At Atlas I built the hammer builder, a product configurator on BigCommerce. Today I write the front end of the themes I build and the admin screens of my plugins.
