The brief
Bayview is a private golf and country club in Thornhill, Ontario, with golf, racquets, fitness, aquatics, dining and events. The site had to sell a year-round family club, not just a golf course, and stay quiet and premium while doing it.
What I did
As Senior Web Designer and Developer at Jonas Club Software, I designed and built it end to end. Every pillar of the club gets the same rhythm: a full-width photograph with a two-line title, a script word over a serif word such as World Class Golf or Exquisite Dining, then a split panel with a framed photograph and two clear buttons, one for the facility and one for membership.
Visual concept
Cormorant Garamond sets the headlines. It is an old-style display serif with long, fine strokes, the kind of letter you find on a club invitation, and at large sizes it feels calm rather than loud. Lato takes the text, a humanist sans that stays warm and readable on coloured panels. The big titles that divide the homepage, World Class Golf, Exquisite Dining and the rest, are not simply laid over the photographs: they are set with mix-blend-mode: color-burn, so the letters burn into the picture behind them and take on its colour.
The colours are lifted from the course: fairway olive (#6e713b), moss (#8a8d4a) and bark (#6a5e3e), on parchment (#f8f7f0) instead of pure white. The olive panels let the photography do the selling, and the parchment keeps long pages soft on the eye.
