What is D3.js?
D3, short for Data-Driven Documents, binds data to elements on a page and transforms them: scales, axes, shapes, layouts and transitions for building any chart, map or network you can describe.
It is lower level than a charting library by design. Nothing comes pre-built, which is why it is behind so many custom, interactive graphics in newsrooms and dashboards.
How I use D3.js
I teach D3.js at Conestoga College, in the web development program, alongside WordPress theme and plugin development and CMS work, with hands-on projects for local businesses.
The habits carry into my own charts: scales chosen for the data, labels that do not collide, and motion only where it explains something.
