What is jQuery?
jQuery is a small JavaScript library, released in 2006, that wraps the DOM in a friendlier API: select elements, change them, animate them and handle events and AJAX calls with far less code than the browser APIs of its day needed.
Modern browsers have caught up, so new code often uses plain JavaScript. But WordPress still bundles jQuery, many themes and plugins depend on it, and knowing it well is part of maintaining real sites.
How I use jQuery
jQuery was everyday work on the Kentico club sites at Jonas, among them The British Club and Mentor Harbor Yachting Club, and on WordPress builds, where it runs in no-conflict mode.
On new work I reach for plain JavaScript first and keep jQuery where a site already depends on it. Less script means faster pages.
