What is IIS?

Internet Information Services is the web server built into Windows Server, first released in 1995. It hosts ASP.NET applications, handles bindings, certificates and URL rewrite rules, and is managed from IIS Manager or PowerShell.

How I use IIS

IIS is on my list from the .NET side of enterprise web work, where systems like Kentico are hosted on it.

What IIS connects to

KenticoA .NET content management system and digital experience platform from the Czech Republic, used by enterprises and software vendors.
DNSThe internet's directory: it turns names like arvindkumar.ca into the addresses servers answer on, and says where a domain's email goes.
CloudflareA global network in front of websites: DNS, CDN caching, security, redirects and rules that run at the edge.
