What is Headless CMS?
A headless CMS separates the back end, where people write and manage content, from the front end that displays it. Content goes out over an API to a website, an app or anything else, and the front end is built with whatever framework suits it.
The gains are speed and freedom on the front end; the costs are two systems to run and the loss of the editing comforts a traditional CMS gives editors for free.
How I use Headless CMS
I teach CMS development at Conestoga College with a focus on performance and headless builds. At Atlas, moving the store to an API-first setup on GraphQL was the first step on a roadmap toward a headless storefront.
